How to Build a Beautiful DIY Farmhouse Headboard- A Weekend Project

Ever since we moved into our current home, our master bedroom headboard has been at the top of our my project list. I knew I wanted a beautiful farmhouse style headboard. What I didn’t want was the heavy retail price tag. I searched high and low at places like Target, Wayfair, Amazon and even Walmart without finding an affordable option for us.

There is this perfect vantage point of our bedroom from the glider in my son’s room. I remember staring at that empty wall space above our bed for years, it felt like, while rocking our son to sleep. Just willing a headboard to appear. I wanted it so bad I could taste it. Something about looking at that same view, night after night, and waiting, waiting, waiting for it to happen just makes me appreciate it so much more now that it’s here, as so often happens in life.

This project inevitably got put on hold over the years after one thing or another got in the way. Either we didn’t have the time to devote to it, or we always had something else to put our money into. Untilllll I stumbled across Ana White’s Farmhouse Headboard Plans.

How To Save Money Decorating Your Home

So, my usual Target adventure goes like this. I walk into said store with a few things on my list and a clear idea on what it is that I’m wanting. 3 hours and a full red cart later, I’m chewing on my fingernails and debating what all I need to put back because I may have gone a bit overboard.

It’s so easy to get swept up in all the pretty things and all the latest trends. And I cannot be the only one whose mouth drops open at the price of some of these items. I mean, it’s a candle for crying out loud! Don’t even get me started on throw pillows.

That’s why I came up with this list of how you can save money decorating your home. Sometimes all it takes is a little effort and creativity and you can still have that beautiful home you want. And, dare I say, a much more unique home that speaks more to your family than any items from a box store ever could.

1.) Use baskets, cake stands, and decorative boxes to group objects.

One of my favorite tricks for pulling together a space is to use a nice woven basket to corral all the smaller scale decor objects. My console table in my living room has a oval textured basket on it that I filled with some cute items from Target’s spring dollar section. Those items looked cute enough on their own, but putting them all in that basket made them seem more substantial and special. I think I spent a total of like 12 bucks on those “filler” items but they don’t seem cheap when displayed like that. And you just cannot beat Target’s dollar aisle!

My Ugly Backyard- and What I Want To Do About It!!

You would never believe me, if I told you.

Trust me, if you saw my backyard in it’s current state, you would think I’m insane. Certifiable. Well, wait, I guess you will see it in a moment. You make your own call.

But it was this backyard that sealed the deal for Jeremy and I on our house. It’s a quaint little fenced in yard with lots of trees and squirrels. (Including Bob the squirrel, our little bob tailed squirrel that’s lived in our backyard since he was a baby.)

I love the silo in the background. If that land behind our lot is ever for sale, we plan to snatch it right up!

The Story of Our Home

So this is the back story on why we live where we do, how we came to live here, and why we chose this particular house as the home for our family. Living in this home hasn’t always been easy or fun. There have been times when we have been tempted to walk away, to choose something not quite such a fixer upper, or maybe even build a home from scratch.

But I’m so glad we’ve stuck it out. This house IS home. Our home. And looking back in hindsight, I feel this whole journey has set us up to put us exactly where we are meant to be in this moment. Our blog would never have started without this home. At the end of the day, this place our family returns home to every night has become a haven. And like the old saying goes, anything worth having is worth working for.

Back when we first moved in our current home, money was tight.  We had just welcomed our miracle baby Ansley six short months prior. We moved in a whirlwind frenzy after selling our first house just 4 days after it was initally listed on the market and to top it all off, only had one week to move out of it. Needless to say, my plans on a well organized move bit the dust. Heck, I was just thankful to have stuff thrown in boxes at this point.

Our current home- Before
