Home Tour

Our house on Lake Street has always felt like home for us since the moment we first laid eyes on the inside. We’ve had to practice a lot of patience as many issues piled up on us as soon as we became owners, (like master shower leak that can’t be fixed unless shower is replaced, sewer backup into our basement, a leaking chimney, leaks everywhere actually, and water that pools in the backyard.) Despite of all that, we are still as in love with this house as ever. It has just taken a lot longer to get to the renovating than we planned. Here is our ever so humble progress.

How to Pick the Perfect Paint Color- And How to Avoid My Mistakes

I got 99 problems, but paint ain’t one, said no home DIY’er ever. Picking the elusive perfect paint color is a bit like trying to pick that perfect foundation shade when you first started wearing makeup. (Sorry, Dad. I’m gonna exclude you here for a min.)

Girls, you know what I’m talking about. It was either too dark, too light, too pink. You remember. Or those awful photos where you thought you had a suitable foundation picked and quickly realized that was, indeed, false. And I think that’s why I’m always hesitant to switch brands once I’ve found a shade I like. I know what the struggle will entail.

So, I’m pretty sure that same sort of sentiment is where the anxiety stems from when picking a paint color for your walls, let alone your whole house. And I’m going to contradict myself here, although paint is considered a cheap and easy update, it’s not exactly a cheap and easy update.

How To Transform An Ugly Outdated Seventies Bathroom- Part 1

Okay, I want a show of hands. Whose favorite color is mauve? No one? Like, why was it ever even a thing to put mauve anywhere, let alone in a bathroom??? We literally have not even touched our hall bathroom in the whole time we’ve lived in our house other than to hang a shower curtain. Literally, I’m not lying. And I’ll show you a pic in a minute if you promise not to laugh. No, really, it’s that bad.

And for that matter, I don’t believe any of the previous owners had ever touched that bathroom since the house was built in 1979. I’m sure it probably has something to do with how overwhelming and expensive a complete gut job on a bathroom can be. It takes a lot of time, a little bit of skill, and a lot more money.

Not to mention the logistics. For example, our hall bath is the only bathroom in the house with a tub. While we do have a shower in our master bedroom, even though it’s not working at the moment *ugh*, I can only imaging trying to give our 1 year old and 4 year old a shower. I’m picturing the prom scene from “Carrie” in my mind where the blood gets dumped over her head. Haha, yeah nope, thanks. I’ll pass on that. And we’re also trying to wait until the kids are a bit older and can handle a shower better while a major renovation on their bathroom is going on. Hopefully something like that will take place in a few years.

And while we haven’t quite saved up enough for a full-on, take a sledge hammer to the walls type renovation, we’ve definitely got some ideas in mind to make this space more appealing in the meantime.

Macchiato Mondays

As most of you know, I’m a self proclaimed book nerd and avid coffee lover. And so not a Monday morning type of person. I thought what better way to start off the week than with a little book club style “coffee break”, if you will.

So, imagine, instead of sitting at your cubicle, you’re instead at home curled up in your favorite little reading nook. You’ve got your steaming cup of coffee on the table beside you, a new book, and a whole rainy day looming in front of you with nothing to do but read and listen to the thunder.

Those used to be my favorite types of days and I thought we all could use a little bit more of that in our lives. So starting today, “Macchiato Monday’s” officially begin. I’ll feature a new coffee recipe each week along with 5 of my favorite books. And don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of “favorite” books, wink wink.
